Safety helmet and head protection:
What you need to know

When working in environments where there is a risk of falling objects or impacts against hard surfaces, a safety helmet is an important part of your protection. It provides peace of mind because you know that your head is well protected – and that you follow the applicable safety requirements.

Head protection – how to take the best care of yourself

If you work on a construction site or in industry, your helmet must protect against falling objects and impacts. Therefore, the safety helmet is a legal requirement – and an important part of your daily safety.

It provides peace of mind because you know that your head is well protected – and that you follow the applicable safety requirements.

How to find the right helmet
A helmet must primarily be comfortable to wear so you can work safely and without discomfort. Think about:

Comfort and fit
The helmet should fit well so that neck and shoulders are not unnecessarily strained
Helmet with safety glasses
Space for other equipment
Do you need hearing protection, visor, lamp, or cap? Choose a helmet that can be adjusted
Helmet with shade
With or without shade
A short shade allows clear visibility upwards. A longer shade shields against the sun.
Helmet with ventilation

If you work in hot environments, a helmet with ventilation can make your day more comfortable.

Screw adjustment makes it easy to customize the helmet – even if you sometimes wear a cap.

For daily use, a comfort insert is recommended so the helmet fits well for many hours.

Bump caps – for lighter protection

A bump cap (EN 812) is a lightweight work hat that protects against hitting the head on fixed objects. However, it is not approved for falling objects and therefore cannot be used where a safety helmet is required.

Watch out for the lifespan

A helmet typically lasts 3–5 years, but sun, wind, and daily use wear down the material. Always discard the helmet if it has received a blow, has cracks, or has become discolored. Your safety is at stake.

Avoid homemade stickers or paint on the helmet – it can weaken the plastic. Use only approved labels.

Certifications

- extra safety

In addition to EN 397, helmets can be tested for specific conditions. Look for stamps such as:

–30 °C – withstands cold

+150 °C – withstands heat

440/1000 VAC – protects against electricity

LD (Lateral Deformation) – extra strength on the sides

MM (Molten Metal) – resistant to molten metal

Why are certifications important?

Certifications document that the helmet has been tested according to international standards and meets specific safety requirements. It provides your company with security that the equipment properly protects employees under the conditions where the helmet is to be used.

How to choose the right helmet? Use this checklist

Does the helmet sit comfortably?

Can it be used with your equipment?
Do you need shade – or clear visibility?

Do you work in hot environments?

Should there be space for a cap?
How many hours at a time do you wear the helmet?
