Safety helmet and head protection: What you need to know
Head protection – how to take the best care of yourself
If you work on a construction site or in industry, your helmet must protect against falling objects and impacts. Therefore, the safety helmet is a legal requirement – and an important part of your daily safety.
It provides peace of mind because you know that your head is well protected – and that you follow the applicable safety requirements.
A bump cap (EN 812) is a lightweight work hat that protects against hitting the head on fixed objects. However, it is not approved for falling objects and therefore cannot be used where a safety helmet is required.
A helmet typically lasts 3–5 years, but sun, wind, and daily use wear down the material. Always discard the helmet if it has received a blow, has cracks, or has become discolored. Your safety is at stake.
Avoid homemade stickers or paint on the helmet – it can weaken the plastic. Use only approved labels.
Certifications
- extra safety
In addition to EN 397, helmets can be tested for specific conditions. Look for stamps such as:
–30 °C – withstands cold
+150 °C – withstands heat
440/1000 VAC – protects against electricity
LD (Lateral Deformation) – extra strength on the sides
MM (Molten Metal) – resistant to molten metal
Why are certifications important?
Certifications document that the helmet has been tested according to international standards and meets specific safety requirements. It provides your company with security that the equipment properly protects employees under the conditions where the helmet is to be used.
