What you should know about gas detectors
When working in enclosed spaces, such as tanks or wells, there may be invisible dangers in the form of gases, which can have fatal consequences.
Which detector should you choose
When choosing a detector, it is important to consider what it should warn against?
- Should it measure oxygen (O2) in case of risk of oxygen deficiency?
- Should it measure the concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H2S)?
- Should it measure the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO)?
- Is there a need for measuring equipment for multiple gases?
- In what environments and for what purpose will the detector be used?
- How often and for how long should the detector be used?
Portable detectors are available for measuring the concentration of a single gas, e.g., oxygen or hydrogen sulfide, or for measuring up to 4 gases. Detectors that can measure multiple gases can be configured to measure specific gases — based on the risk assessment of possible gases. The configuration is performed by the supplier in collaboration with the user and possibly the company's safety organization.
Single-gas meters often have a lifespan of 2 years after which they are discarded, meaning no service.
