What you should know about high-visibility clothing

When working in areas with moving traffic, you must wear fluorescent work clothing.

How to choose the right clothing

High-visibility clothing is made of fluorescent fabric that makes you visible in daylight, typically yellow or orange, and equipped with reflective bands so you can be seen in the dark when car headlights hit you.

Reflective clothing is divided into three classes. Which class you should choose depends on the traffic and its speed.

  • Class 1 reflective clothing – or higher class – is chosen if the surrounding traffic is traveling at about 30 km/h or less.

  • Class 2 reflective clothing – or higher class – is chosen if the surrounding traffic is traveling between approximately 30 and 60 km/h.

  • Class 3 reflective clothing is chosen if the surrounding traffic is traveling over approximately 60 km/h.

Additionally, consideration must be given to aggravating factors such as poor visibility.

Note that the clothing must be clean and not too worn or faded for the fluorescent effect and reflectors to work properly. Therefore, the clothing is also marked with how many washes it can withstand.
